Fantastic Meal & Service We ate here on Monday night after managing to get a last minute booking. It’s small restaurant with a great atmosphere. The menu looked great and we couldn’t decide what to order so went for the tasting menu and were not disappointed. Would certainly return if in Swansea again.
I wish I had been nicer to the overworked young waiter. We were in Swansea for a rather emotional event; the dispersal of ashes of two relatives in the sea at Mumbles, a pair where the couple had owned a house and been happy. It was the husband’s birthday and also mine, although I chose not to mention this. We took our hostess, who was the late gentleman’s relative, to Hanson at the Chelsea to thank her for her hospitality. A very nice young man was the only waiter. He did apologise later for the wait, but he was all on his own and very busy. He obviously wanted to do his best. I decided that I wanted a cold glass of Fino or Manzanilla. I had forgotten that sherry is no longer a fashionable drink; perhaps it’s true that no Briton under the age of fifty drinks it. I got a glass of sweet sherry; the glass was warm to the touch. I had asked for an ice cold glass of very dry sherry. However, my drink was quickly replaced. The white house wine was very palatable. My husband had a gin and tonic (no Bombay Sapphire on offer) and a Chenin Pinot Grigio. We had starters. Our hostess had the goat’s cheese tart, I had the chicken liver terrine and my husband chose the crab mousse. All were excellent. We chose the Dover Sole and our friend had fish and chips. The food was worth the slightly long wait; not an excessive time, though. As we are all upwards of seventy we did not have room for a pudding, but envied other diners what they were sampling. My husand and I had an espresso and an Americano with a little cold milk but our hostess declined coffee.
Swansea March 2024 What amazing food and service at a great price plus a wine list that caters for every taste. Monday night in Swansea as well! Definitely will visit again
Superb Stumbled on this little gem a couple of years ago hiding away in a little side alley off the infamous wind street! So glad I did, the food is fantastic quality and great value considering the obvious care that is taken preparing it. this great little restaurant is quite simply top notch
A Jewel in Swansea If this isn’t the best eating house in Swansea I would be shocked excellent friendly service, lovely food, I agree with chicken liver pate comment, meal for two with drinks less than £60. We will return
Fabulous all round, fresh, homemade generous portions, beautiful Visited on a Tuesday lunchtime with friends, I can honestly say it was one of the best meals we have all had in a long time, everything home made, fresh and delicious, we all had something different and every meal so so good, service excellent and great value for money.
“BEAUTIFULLY COOKED AND PRESENTATION WAS STUNNING” Visited this restaurant last night September 15th, along with my husband and 11 year old son. We all had a three course meal and every plate was beautifully presented. My husband had the french onion soup, which was to die for. My son and I both had the scallopes, which were beautifully presented and tasty. The duck was also to die for….just melted in the mouth. My husband had the bass and my son had the sirloin both of which were also lovely. Desserts …. Well what can I say…..All homemade, the lemon tart….Gorgeous…..The chocolate pecan tart….Gorgeous. As for the restaurant, it is a lovely relaxing atmosphere, and a lovely helpful waitress.I definitely recommend this restaurant for any occasion and will certainly be going back there.
Great food but cramped dining space. Great food and great value for money but the restaurant is cramped and that does detract from the experience. My mackerel starter and confit duck main course dishes were well presented and tasty. My partner’s fish-cake starter and hake main were tasty and generous. The atmosphere was relaxed, the service good and the cost more than reasonable……but the downstairs is small and anyone sitting on the ‘outside’ of the tables is going to be conscious of people having to squeeze past. Great food but not as relaxing an experience as it should be to enjoy it because it’s cramped.
Excellent Lunch I dropped in for lunch with a client without a reservation and quite late but was still accommodated.Lunch was excellent, starters were sardines and smoked salmon, mains were fish and chips and hake fillet followed by Creme Brulee. Food was full of flavour and well presented and the total came to £57 including drinks.Friendly staff and good background music at the right volume.Definitely on my return list and highly recommended.
Superb food and excellent service Would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. I am embaressed to say that I did not know of this amazing restaurants’ existance….and not only do I live in Swansea, but I also visit restaurants quite regularly!! What have I missed..well probably one of the best restaurants not only in Swansea, but anywhere!! It is only small, and to be honest easily missed if walking by….. Steve our waiter was delightful….excellent service, the food was all freshly prepared and HOME MADE. It was not particularly cheap…but well worth it. There was also a set evening menu of 3 courses, which was reasonably priced, good value for money. I have been told since my visit, that the lunch time menus are also excellent and superb value for money. Without doubt I will be re visiting SOON!! Will also spread the word!!
Lunch with a Friend Well, what can I say. Fantastic Food at a reasonable price. Service 1st class and the choice for a lunch time was amazing. Food is fresh and well presented as well as tasting delicious.I’ve been before and the standard has been the same every time. I’m converting all my friends to make this their 1st choice for eating out.You will not be disappointed
Lush Lunch!!! ‘Hanson at the Chelsea’ was recommended to me by a representative that visited our company in the Midlands, he came from Swansea and I was off to the Gower on holiday, he said “you must go to this place, it is amazing”. I duly booked lunch to celebrate my 60th birthday – we were not disappointed – we chose from the selection of the set lunch menu and the food was locally sourced, imaginative, beautifully cooked and very well presented. This restaurant is a little gem hidden away on a side street and most certainly a credit to the owner, we will visit again, thank you, you made my birthday memorable and my waistline expand!!
Beautifully presented food , excellent quality very fresh. Fabulous food lovely intimate surroundings, definitely a two rosette restaurant, well worth a visit. I had my birthday party here,we took over the whole restaurant and the standard was exceptional, everyone was so impressed with the food thank you all for a memorable evening.
A Perfect Lunch A sunny day brought us to Swansea for a look around and a walk. We researched somewhere reasonable for lunch and found many restaurants were closed as it was a Monday. A review of the TA reports suggested that Hanson at the Chelsea might be a good choice, and we were not disappointed. This is a small (c30 seat) restaurant – casual dining, with plain tables nicely dressed. The menu at lunchtime is a three course (with around six choices per course) for just under £20. The wine list includes three or four good reds and whites by the glass. Service was efficient and swift, yet unhurried. But the main event was the food. This is as serious kitchen. As starters, I chose the salmon fish cake with Perl Wen melting centre whilst my partner chose the smoked salmon and flaked crab, paired with summer fruits and berries. Both were excellent with the fish cake having that balance of external crispness and internal moisture and taste, helped by the melting cheese inside. The smoked salmon and crab contrasted well with the fruit on this hot summer’s day and was a delight. We chose confit of duck and hake filet as our main courses. The hake came with mushroom parfait potato glaze and a herb butter sauce, with vegetables. It was judged to perfection and notably the vegetables were that right balance between al-dente and over-cooked. The mange-tout in particular were beautifully crisp yet not hard. Timing is clearly a strong point in the kitchen. The duck dish with gratin potatoes and port & orange sauce was reported by my partner as the best tasted for many years. For dessert a lemon tart – moist and tangy and a brownie with anglaise sauce and honeycomb ice cream – light and satisfying. The meal ended with good coffee. This is a really rewarding find in a relatively insignificant back-street just off Wind Street near the castle. The value for money is good and it was hard to fault any aspect of what was a truly enjoyable and relaxed lunch experience.
Excellent in every way We visited on a Tuesday night, with very few fellow diners but we felt the food, service and ambiance were first class. Although Hanson’s concentrates on fish, with a healthy specials board of fish, there is plenty of choice available. The chef is clearly influenced by classic french style cooking and presentation, flavour and quality were faultless. The waiter was friendly and efficient and made the occasion special. My wife dined from the A La Carte menu (reckon £30 for three courses) whilst I had the set £19.99 menu. Wines were reasonably priced. Would I go back if in the area again? You bet!
Highly recommend Very impressed! I had seafood and my partner had steak both dishes were beautifully cooked. And the deserts were out of this world.Staff were greatWould highly recommend this restaurant without hesitation.
Excellent food, well presented and good service We were a party of 5 celebrating my 60th birthday, booked in at the last minute and had a table in the basement. The resturant was fully booked, but the service was friendly and efficient. The food was well presented and delicious. I think it is the best in Swansea. The only downside is that such a beautiful restaurant is at the bottom of Wind Street, which can be a little boisterous on a weekend matchday! We really enjoyed our visit.
Mother’s Day Lunch This place was revisited by me and the family after many years. I must say we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of food and Calibre of service. It was fantastic. The servers were attentive and the food was just as we ordered. Came out hot and piping no long delays and it was well presented on the plate. Made it appetising and couldn’t wait to dig in. It wasn’t frightfully expensive and the portions were adequate. Really enjoyed my treat today. Worth it !
Don’t sit downstairs in the basement! Visited with husband and parents and booked early table around 6:30pm – I was warned that they only had tables downstairs available, and I said this was ok wrongly thinking that they meant ground floor. The basement is fine but was very quiet until two other tables arrived. We also felt slightly forgotten about until the two other tables came. Food was excellent though and the staff are lovely. We also had some very nice wine and desserts off the specials choices were incredible!
Annual review A great menu, made it difficult to choose at first; unfortunately, for a few of us, they didn’t have everything available, which was disappointing. There were 20 people which was a challenge, but the service could have been a little better; some waited ages even for a soft drink. The quality of the food was very good and no one complained about that.I would visit again, but would make sure that a large group is not going.
Lovely Meal Went for a 5 course taster menu with a Groupon voucher. The meal was very good and plenty of it. Service was very good and we didnt have to wait long between courses. Would def go again .
Small, but excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. The service was very good and the food was simply delicious. I was surprised how small the place was, but the atmosphere and food were brilliant on a busy Saturday night. There was order to the chaos and the food was great.
Just Simply Fantastic The title says it all. Wonderful food cooked with so much passion by chef and owner Andrew Hanson. We arrived on a Friday night to a really warm welcome. The ambience was intimate with the staff on hand just when needed. We had scallops to start which were cooked perfectly and Lamb as main course (not my usual choice but were just so tender). My wife had the hake which she said just melted in the mouth. We were quite full by this time but were recommend the trio of desserts with two spoons which topped off a wonderful gastronomic experience. Would thoroughly recommend and no doubt will be back soon.
Top Food expertly cooked A spontaneous visit to Hanson’s last night brought a much deserved smile to my face after a long day in the office. The food never fails to impress – Andrew is a true master of his trade and truly deserves his rosettes. I have to disagree with Rachel D in that it is expensive. We had a starter of chicken and foie gras parfait and one of scallops, followed by the thickest rib-eye steak I have ever seen and a dish of lamb three ways. Extra seasonal vegetables and two large glasses of very good red wine and two italian beers at under £75 seems pretty reasonable to me. Having been charged £50 at another Swansea eaterie last year for unspeakably horrible food and wine Hanson’s is probably one of the best value restaurants in town. Top quality food expertly cooked – what more could a girl ask for?
Very good food, poor waitressing Had to book a couple of weeks in advance but was understandable as the restaurant is one of the best in the city and holds 2 AA Rosettes. I booked here as my parents were coming down to visit me at University. We arrived and were immediately seated , the first waitress that served us was quite cold and didn’t seem like she wanted to be there. The other waitresses were helpful but not attentive as we had to call to ask for the dessert menus and the bill despite our plates not being cleared, this was the same for a couple of other tables. We all ordered different starters, mains and desserts and all thoroughly enjoyed, just wished that the service was as good as the food.
Great Food Finally managed a table one Friday lunchtime after a couple of earlier attempts had met with a “sorry but fully booked”. And we could understand why. The fish dishes, for which the restaurant has a deservedly good reputation, were superb but the menu also offers a wide selection of dishes if fish is not your thing. Meals are cooked to order and service can be a bit slow so if time is of the essence then this is not for you. One couple who took their seats walked out before being served a drink which was a shame as they missed one of the best and most conistent restaurants in the Swansea area.
excellent food, grotty staff! food first classstaff rude – one in particular, stinks of cigarette smoke!very unfriendlyspent over £400, not even a thank you or good bye.
Absolutely Outstanding Evening out Visited Hanson’s at the Chelsea for a birthday meal with my Sister. We visited at 7pm on a Saturday evening. We haven’t visited before, and I was immediately impressed by the attentive staff and the intimate feel of the place. We we’re given a choice of tables, and picked a nice 2 seater towards the back of the main floor. The menu had a great selection of food choices, and we had the 2 course set dinner menu. I had the Slow-Cooked Belly pork and it was divine. It was the nicest meal I’ve ever had. Tasty, perfectly cooked and wonderfully presented. I then opted for the Tahitian Vanilla Crème Brulé for desert. It was the best Crème Brulé I’ve ever had. So creamy and smooth, with a crunchy sugary crust. Amazing. I would highly recommend it The staff were also lovely, out Waiter (I didn’t catch his name) was friendly, helpful and chatty (in just the right way) and helped round off the evening to a perfect night. We were one of the first to arrive, and the last to leave; we would have stayed all night if we could!
Top Quality Superb food in this Two Rosette Restaurant.Small but very comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpfull. One of the best we have eaten at this year and we have lots of top quality restaurants in Cornwall to compare. Make a reservation as it does not have many covers.
Outstanding Haven’t been for a meal here for a number of years, but it’s still every bit as excellent as I remember. Ok, I’ve never actually eaten at a Michelin starred restaurant, but I can’t see how they can beat the food at the Chelsea. The presentation is outstanding, the taste is amazing, and the portions are great too. The vegetarian meal I had was amazing (I’m not a Vegeterian, just sounded delicious and it was), and the desert was to die for. Only problem is that I can’t wait to go back and try something else.
One of the Very Best Restaurants in or around Swansea. We often have lunch or dinner at the Chelsea Cafe and have done for a number of years. The food and service is always first class and the atmosphere is very pleasant. The menu is extensive and there are also daily specials to choose from, so there will be something to suit all tastes. The wine list is also good, albeit a bit pricey, but not more than other comparable restaurants. We highly recommend the Chelsea Cafe for lunch and for dinner and for special occasions.
Many visits. The venue is nicely intimate, and the food great. The atmosphere is most pleasantand the staff polite and efficient.Been many times and never disappointed.
Very very good Having bought a travelzoo voucher and never been before we decided to visit. The place is small and quirky but this adds to the vibe as being very intimate and relaxed at the same time. My partner had soup, whilst I had the chicken liver parfait. She had hake for main whilst I had steak. Desert was chocolate tart and I had the cheese board.Everything was cooked to perfection and the portions were ample. We thoroughly enjoyed so much I have booked to visit again in 2 weeks. Well done.
Fantastic Hadn’t visited for some time, but not disappointed. lovely tasty food and decent wine too. The pastry on the beef bourguignon was fantastic.
Just amazing Booked this hidden gem for my birthday and I’m so glad we did. There’s a reason why this restaurant has so many awards. The food. It’s so hard to find somewhere different to eat away from chains these days, so when we came across this independent restaurant we had to try it and I’m glad we did. The welcome we received when we walked in was fantastic and we were given a choice of tables, which was nice. The service throughout the meal was perfect. Very attentive and extremely polite and helpful. The food itself was divine. Everything we had was cooked to perfection and the flavours were amazing. If you are used to dining in chain restaurants then the potion sizes might seem small, however the quality of the food is second to none and to be honest we had three courses and by the end of it all we were glad the potion sizes were what they were and no bigger! If you are fed up of eating in a high street, chain eatery, or if you want to celebrate an occasion, look no further that this place. Yes it’s a little more expensive than some, but you are paying for quality of food.I would certainly recommend this place to everyone, in fact I can’t wait to go back myself.
Lunch Lovely little place , good wine and great food , our meals would of been more to our liking, if we had a little more sauce on our mains , and that is only because we like a sauce, and I’m sure, if we asked next time we go, it would be ok , absolutely loved it and will be going again xx
Fantastic restaurant in the centre of Swansea Went here with friends (2 couples) on the basis of trip advisor and was so pleased we did. Service was great and the food was incredible. They were very good with my gluten free requirements (I’m coeliac) and the food was delicious. The scallops and smoked salmon starters were great and the lamb main and duck main were very tasty. Great find off the main strip of Wind Street and would definitely return.
Over from Dublin visiting family Visited this restaurant this week as a guest with new family. Service was excellent. Goats cheese starter delicious followed by lamb 2 ways – the nicest lamb dish I have tasted in years – lovely creamy potatoes with 2 lamb cutlets which were melt in your mouth ! The second lamb dish was a small pot of shepherds pie also delicious. For dessert we had the sharing platter with various assorted desserts and cheeses. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals – duck, steak and fish dishes. Best meal I’ve had in a restaurant in a long time ! Definitely will return.
Fantastic Went for lunch for our anniversary. The meal was absolutely outstanding. My wife had the 7 course taster menu. She said it was the best meal she ever had. I had the venison Ragu to start, ribeye for main and sticky toffee pudding for dessert. I don’t think I gave ever had a nicer steak. It was cooked perfectly all the way through.Andrew , the owner came out after he had finished cooking and sat down to talk to us. Such a lovely touch. I would recommend anyone to go and have food at the restaurant as I believe it is the best restaurant in Swansea We will definitely be going back!
Non comparable – superb Visited early this week and already eyeing up a return for an evening meal. Enjoyed a superb two course lunch there with work colleagues and without doubt Swansea’s best eatery. Locally sourced dishes which were simply stunning and service to match. Your only dilemma will be what to choose as everything looks so appealing with a choice of 8 starters and 8 mains you are spoilt for choice and it is a tricky decision you will not be disappointed whatever choice you finally make. I highly recommend both the fish cake and the belly pork as they were outstanding but every member of my party enjoyed and we all had different dishes. To complement the food there is also a fabulous wine list with some perfect food pairings.Looking forward to my return
Recommended by a colleague Great place visited on a Monday night in January. Place was packed with other diners who was obviously was in the know. Had fish starter and calves liver to follow. Really was looking forward to trying the cheese board but had no spare room. I’ll have ago next time I’m in Swansea.
Lunch time Girlie get together . Saturday lunch with the girls , restaurant was full and atmosphere very vibrant . Food was a great price for a set meal with lots of choice . Wine was reasonably priced . Staff were a little pressed as busy , but quite tollerant of our giggly group ! Food very nice especially the confit de canard . Will return for sure .
Anniversary lunch We come here every year and it never disappoints… Had a yummy 3 course lunch, goats cheese to start which was warm and delicious, pork for mains done a few different ways, a little bonbon, and topped with apple and various other tasty bits then cheesecake… All stunning!
Superb food If you’re ever in Swansea you MUST visit Hanson’s. The food is of exceptional quality. The menu is varied and interesting using locally sourced meat and fish which are cooked to perfection. Also, the staff are friendly and helpful.Give it a try. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
FABULOUS This is probably the Best Restaurant in Swansea. The food is faultless, the service superb and the wine divine. Nothing else to say………….Be back soon.
High quality food at a reasonable price. Went there on a first date, we both had starters and main accompanied by a bottle of white wine. The staff were welcoming and very friendly and the food was absolutely fantastic. I was shocked at my bill being so reasonable. Will definitely return in the very near future.
Great night out Went for a colleagues leaving dinner. Not been here for a while and the food was amazing. The whole evening was perfect, great service, lovely wines and food cooked to perfection. The beef three ways is stunning, with hand cooked chips. They do a special lunch menu which is of great value. Highly recommended!
Heavenly Hanson.. We love this little restaurant ..It is very small and extremely popular so booking, even for lunch is a must. I you are in a wheelchair it’s not the place for you as there is almost no room to manoeuvre, my husband is on crutches and just about managed, plus I couldn’t see a ground floor disabled toilet. The menu offers something for everyone. The food is cooked and presented beautifully, and I have always had good service here. It can get very noisy as the ceilings are low in a small room, but on booking they always let you know if there is a big party due in.A favourite we have returned to regularly.
Fabulous food; outstanding service. Consistently the best restaurant in Swansea. In the last few months we have been to the Chelsea Restaurant on three occasions: two lunchtime meals and a fabulous 7 course taster menu in the evening. The consistency of quality, service and cheerful efficiency are always exemplary. It is the most convivial and inviting of eateries and we have been enjoying excellent varied dishes for years. Hanson has richly deserved all the awards he and his lovely team have worked hard to achieve. The jewel in the crown of Swansea’s culinary scene.
Black Friday Somehow myself and 15 friends managed to get a table here at the start of December for black friday. As I have said before, the food cant be faulted and was again bang on. Service was excellent.Restaurant is still in my opinion the best in Swansea and a must visit. Will be trying slice this year as a comparison to Chelsea cafe. Will take some beating in my opinion however.
Fantastic lunch at the Chelsea Cafe to brighten a wet, dreary day. My partner and I visited the restaurant on Tuesday lunchtime. We did not reserve and found the restaurant reasonably full. The service from the waitress was excellent and she served us in an efficient, unflustered manner, and was able to offer good advice on the dishes we ordered. As to the food itself, well….My starter was the Salmon and crab and it was a visual and tastey delight. The main I had was the Hake, whilst my partner had Confit of duck. We finished with brioche bread and butter pudding infused with whisky and honey and crepe brûlée, plus we each had a glass of wine with our meal which took the meal to £50 which I thought very reasonable for the excellent quality of the food on offer here. The place has been going for the best part of 18 years and is an absolute gem of a restaurant.
Lovely food, locally sourced Fantastic food, quite a good choice with a 3 course set menu for under £20. Enjoyed the lava bread crumble and cockle popcorn, always good to have local food choices. Quite a small restaurant, but felt intimate so good atmosphere. Thoroughly recommended!
6th visit just as good as the first Hanson’s was written up in the Sunday Times last week, the review is accurate from my experience, I find it difficult to understand why this exceptionally good restaurant, which is good value for the standard it sets, isn’t higher in the ratings. Andrew Hanson deserves better, it must be hard work to produce consistently good meals. Not only have I recommended this to many friends but I intend to go there often. Unfortunately Swansea has a number of other good restaurants that deserve patronage too.I rated the atmosphere lower because of the downstairs seating on this occasion, upstairs is more fun.
wow The restaurant sn’t very big but it’s a bit of a hidden gem to be honest. I didn’t know anything about it but was recommended by a collegure so decided to treat the misses to some dinner. The steak was probably the best steak that I’ve ever tasted. Just melt in your mouth. It was so good. I cannot wait to dine there again!
Wide Ranging Menu Four of us visited here last weekend for a Saturday dinner. Parking was easily found close by. The dining area is small and the atmosphere is unpretentious and cosy. The menu is wide ranging and supplemented further by a number of specials so making a choice proved difficult for me. I eventually chose the smoked salmon starter. This consisted of 3 small rolls of salmon each served on a horseradish sauce covered slice of beetroot. It was not large but it looked very pretty and was very tasty. I chose the crispy pork belly for my main and shared a side serving of mixed vegetables with my husband which was sufficient. It was served with crispy sliced potatoes. This was also lovely. For dessert I chose the sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice-cream which was as you’d expect. We also had tea/coffee afterwards. Service was excellent. We were never rushed and the white wine served by the glass was perfectly chilled and the recommendation was to my taste. The cost was £40 a head. A perfect meal and an acceptable price. We do recommend this restaurant.
Lovely food and atmosphere We booked only the day before, but were told because we were only a table of two that they’d be able to fit us. Upon arrival, we were taken downstairs to sit on our own- not ideal as we weren’t told this on the phone. Here we ordered drinks and our food, before a waitress come down to tell us a table had cancelled and there was now a table upstairs available for us. We were seated, right beneath the specials board. A bit gutted that we didn’t see this or was made aware of the specials before ordering.Despite this, we really enjoyed our evening from here…We ordered 3 courses; we had the duck and the fillet steak, both beautiful food. Could not fault it, one of the nicest dishes I’ve had. My partner also described the cheesecake as “the best cheesecake I’ve ever had”.It’s only a small restaurant, and all the tables are quite close together. I personally like this, as it creates character and atmosphere. And the staff were lovely and really friendly. Overall, a lovely evening out.
Excellent – Lunch Lunch today – extremely good. Starters – Ham hock and pistachio terrine, cracking terrine but made extra special with clever garnish of tiny pieces of cooked apple, and tiny pieces of raw apple – smoked salmon with melon and lime creme fraiche, good portion well presented.Mains – fillet steak Tournedos served perfectly rare topped with mushrooms and good sauce, – hake topped with fondant potato in a delicious chive beurre blanc. Came with frites/saute potato – and a dish of veg. All top notch.Puds – were Baileys creme brulee and the cheese board.Super.Service good – friendly, attentive – checked everything was OK with each dish. Now bear in mind there were small supplements £4 on the fillet, a £1 on the smoked salmon, BUT we are talking £16.95 for three courses which is outstanding value for money. Cannot recommend it highly enough – go and enjoy.Bottom line – House wine entry £13.95, had a decent bottle of Chilean Sauvignon blanc, coke and a beer – £60!!
Quality all the way! Superb menu choice, could have picked so many dishes, amazing flavours, everything done so simply well – not a surprise I guess from a chef trained in a well know London establishment. We’ll be back v soon!
Fantastic evening meal Four of us had an absolutely first class meal on Tuesday 4th ofMarch. Service was impeccable, waitress was lovely, extremely polite and professional We had scallops with a Thai sauce & crispy noodles for a starter which were to die for. Two of us had the best rack of lamb in Wales ,which were beautifully cooked, the presentation of the meal was superb. The men had medium rare fillet steak perfectly cooked with a delicious sauce . For desserts sticky toffee pudding and brioche bread and butter pudding infused with whisky and honey, which were excellent. Beautiful presentation throughout. food tasted incredible and each flavour complemented the others. We would recommend anyone to go and have food at this restaurant,it is the best one in Swansea. We look forward to going back soon.
Sublime Whilst in Swansea, my companions and I decided another culinary journey was in order; needless to say this led me back to Trip Advisor to define our path. Surprisingly our third choice, Hanson at the Chelsea, was decided for us as the alternatives were already fully booked however – on this occasion – I am glad they were. The small restaurant on St. Mary’s Street is surrounded by the off-putting night life of Swansea, but when you cross the threshold and are taken to your table you easily forget this. Our waiter on that particular evening was the personification of charm and an expert in his field. From waiting patiently for us to deliberate which wine to sample (a full bodied Syrah from Chile) and telling us how certain parts of the meal have been prepared and cooked when asked—all the while keeping us entertained with his good humour and quick wit.On to the food which was our reason for being there and the chief delight of our experience. For starters one of my companions and I both opted for the scallops on a bed of risotto accompanied by black pudding and a small salad. Never before have I had scallops cooked so tenderly, the flesh so supple it seemingly melted in your mouth. The black pudding was, likewise, elevated to new culinary heights: no oatmeal logged sausage was this but a tender, light, disc that left us longing for more. After such an excellent start we eagerly awaited our mains and were, once again, far from disappointed. Two of our group choose the eight hour slow roasted pork belly served over sage and onion mashed potatoes with scrumpy apple sauce and a pink lady glaze. However what the menu didn’t mention and which truly brought the dish together – from the creamy potatoes, roll of pork belly meat so tender it fell apart at the merest suggestion of contact with the fork, and sweet but ever so slightly tart apple sauce – was a mustard sauce that perfectly complimented every element. Rarely does one have a dish where each element works so well in combination with every other, taken as a whole or in varying combinations. With such a high standard set so far it would have bordered on impoliteness to not sample the desserts. Fortunately, for one of my companions who finds decision making more taxing than the rest, a sample is exactly what was on offer. The trio of desserts consisted of a dark Belgian chocolate pudding topped with sauce anglaise, Baileys crème brûlée, and oven baked apple crumble. Each was superb: the sauce anglaise pairing beautifully with the silky smooth chocolate and verging on being worthy of a pot all to itself and the crème brûlée having a wonderful contrast between the crackle of the caramalized top and the rich creamy pudding inside. This other desserts my companions and I choose were similarly excellent, decadent, and worth savouring from the first mouthful to the last.Every dish each of my companions and I had was cooked to perfection, the portions generous, the tastes balanced expertly, and the meal plated masterfully. It must be said that the chef is extremely talented in his delicate execution of fine cuisine.I could only make constructive comments that would improve my experience, none of which are necessary: updating the decor would provide an even better first impression and improve cleanliness and providing aperitifs and petit fours wouldn’t go amiss. But those points aside – I will be dining at Hanson at the Chelsea upon my next visit to Wales and implore all readers to do the same.
Surprise visit for birthday meal My husband booked Hanson’s for a birthday meal with my family. We haven’t been there as a couple for quite a few years (anniversary I think) and I had forgotten how wonderful the food is. We visited on a Tuesday evening this time and were surprised to see a few couples there aswell. For such an exceptional restaurant, the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The waiter (sorry I’m hopeless with names) was very friendly and attentive without being imposing. Although the menu and environment is probably more suited to adults, my teenagers enjoyed themselves immensely (which probably increased my enjoyment) and ate more than they usually do!!! I don’t know why it’s taken us so long to return… I really don’t… but top brownie points to my husband on my special day!
A friendly lunch. Met up with a good friend here for lunch, being a halfway point for both of us. We were shown to our table by Rebecca who informed us that she was originally from Seattle. Chose two courses from the adequate menu which were very tasty and well presented. A very enjoyable lunch with a very friendly, informative server.
Excellent food and service… can’t fault it! Wow… we dined here on our first night in Swansea and what a delight. Starting with Scallops served with black pudding and duck rillettes with a duck egg and toast and followed by the Welsh salt marsh lamb, this was a delightful meal. The lamb comprised 3 large lamb cutlets, served pink, and a small pan of gorgeous shepherds pie… the accompaniment was dauphinois potatoes, mash and a root purée…. we ordered a side of mixed vegetables merely to add a little contrast to the richness. To finish the meal we shared the dessert platter…. wow! Three desserts -all amazing – bread and butter pudding, Creme brûlée and cheesecake and a small selection of cheese and crackers…. an amazing finale. We left with a very full feeling, hoping that the standard would be repeated the following evening at another Swansea restaurant…. sadly it wasn’t! A ‘must visit’ if in Swansea.
A consistently great place to eat! Eaten here at least 5 times now, every meal has been amazing. I’ve eating from the main menu and the specials board, it’s our place to eat when we’re looking for something a bit special. I have eaten in many Michelin stared restaurants all over the world and feel the quality and seasonally reflective menu should hold a Michelin rating! I prefer lunch time dining over evening dinning as I’m not fussed about walking through the gauntlet of half naked youths on Wind St.
Best Rack of Lamb! Lovely dinner at the Chelsea. Hands down the best rack of lamb I had in Wales. Charming little spot, definitely make a reservation as there aren’t too many tables. Affordable good wines. Don’t miss it!
Back for a second time. Second visit, still the same superb food and service. Will be sad when our son finishes his studies at Swansea Uni as we then will not have a reason to visit.
Wonderful experience! We head great scallops, pork belly and sticky toffee pudding…Very english menu, with great choices both starters and main course. With a very nice cheese selection from the region. The Chef is great and service good. Not expensive for the food quality you get. Very good option. Nice ambience.
Very good meal I visited this restaurant with a group of friends. I was very impressed with the dishes offered on the menu, many of which you would not expect to see in an average restaurant. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal (all three courses!). The service was also good, friendly and attentive. My only complaint would be the location of the table on which we were sat. It was so close to the kitchen/serving area that I was constantly aware of the waitress walking behind me with plates and dishes (don’t know if there is a health and safety issue with this). If I go again, I would ask to be sat at another table.
Won’t visit again 😢 We used to consider this restaurant our favourite and first choice when eating out in Swansea. However, after a recent visit and some very upsetting communication from the owner we won’t be returning. I won’t be vengeful and give it a poor rating as the food is truly delightful and the atmosphere is lovely. It’s a small restaurant and booking is advisable. They do have tables downstairs but that area doesn’t have the same atmosphere as the main restaurant. It’s not suitable for disabled clients who may have trouble climbing stairs to go to the toilet. I’ve had to accompany a family member to the pub next door in order for her to use the toilet. It has a children’s menu but I would question if it is child friendly. However, I wish them continued success for the future.
A very tasty tasting menu We had lunch here, using a Travel Zoo promotion. The small, tucked away, premises were sensibly laid out with attentive and welcoming staff who provided excellent service. The tasting menu was well thought out with a wide variety of flavours which complemented each other and worked very well as a whole. Also of note were the ‘just right’ portion sizes. A very enjoyable lunchtime meal.
Our first visit will not be our last – Fab Evening This was our first visit to Hanson and definitely will not be our last, everything is first class the staff are attentive but very discreet, The food is fab, excellent selection and quality. The surrounding are small but fab, so much better than these huge restaurants which are everywhere these days.highly recommended and cannot wait to return either for another evening meal or will definitely be trying their lunch time menu.
Glad we found it My wife and I were in Swansea for a couple of days and looking for nice place to lunch. We booked here but it is hidden away and we were on the point of giving up looking for it when we eventually found it. It is quite small and ” intimate” but cosy. It soon filled up with locals so booking is a must. We had the set menu which was varied with local twists – salmon fish cakes with local cheese centre, duck eggs and pate for starters. We both had the belly pork with black pudding. All very tasty and well presented, service good and reasonably priced- £40 for 2 inc drinks. The rest of the menu is very varied and well worth another visit the next time we are in swansea
Best meal I’ve had Wow the food here was beautiful. It isnt cheap but for a special occasion it is well worth it. I can highly recommend everything i had…the scallop starter, hanson trio main and sharing desert. All to die for. We did have to wait a while for starters but there were a couple of big tables in. The waiters were very helpful and attentive and its a lovely romantic place. We’ll be back!
Sneaky Supper Took advantage of a free evening and a very handy voucher that gave us the 6 course taster menu at an amazing price. Our second visit to this restaurant did not disappoint. The food is excellent, service to match. We will be back, soon hopefully.
Fine Dining at modest price Visited Hanson at Chelsea with a friend. The restaurant is situated in the centre of Swansea off St. Marys Street near the Cross Keys Pub & Hogarth’s Gin Palace. I was recommended the place by a work colleague who had the three course set lunch. The occasion I was going up for was a Bill Bailey gig in Swansea Grand, with him on his Larks in Transit Tour. So we decided to have a pre-theatre lunch (and a boozy, lazy afternoon). We also went for a three course lunch with a bottle of red wine to wash it all down. I had the rabbit, chicken & ham hock terrine with apricot & ginger chutney with sourdough toast for starters. Followed by a main of steak Diane with vegetable & roast potatoes. Finally the piece de-resistance the desert – bread and butter brioche pudding with honey & whiskey. My friend had similar only he had the chicken rillettes as a starter. The meal was fantastic to the taste & well presented. The restaurant is very small, narrow & cosy. (Dare I say compact & bijou?) The staff are very helpful esp. with wine recommendations. They do have a full a la carte menu for evenings. When we return to the restaurant at a later date, my friends have their eye on the seven courses for £40s (compare that to the lunch of three courses for £20). This is well worth a visit for fans of fine dining or that special date, family celebration etc. Look forward to going back there.
Fantastic restaurant – best in Swansea Fantastic food! We had the steak and sword fish. Desserts were amazing. Waitresses were lovely. Can’t fault the place in any way.
Awesome food 🥘 Another great night at Hanson’s at the Chelsea, I can’t fault this little place, eaten here many times and the food is exquisite and not expensive for the quality at all, wine is also great. Fab night out, please don’t go there as that will mean it makes booking my table will get more difficult 😂I prefer to sit upstairs, although it can be loud when the weathers hot 🥵 due to windows and doors open and neighbouring pubs etc, downstairs has no windows but is quiet 🤫
Terrific lunch Lunch today was first class. We had the set deal and were not disappointed in any way. Fresh soup followed by confit of duck. Superb. I could go on but you get my drift!!
EXQUISITE Visited yesterday for lunch. Standard price for a two or three course meal. Full on menu with a sufficient variety of alternatives. My smoked salmon starter, with flaked fresh white crab meat was the perfect summer appetiser. The use of complimentary herbs and the poor mans caviar (lump fish roe), were a welcome addition. The baked hake main course, two pieces of hake with a mushroom stuffing, was flavoursome and substantial. The finale, cheese cake with fresh raspberries, was beautiful to look at, wonderful in taste and a perfect completion to a meal which will linger long in the memory. But not for long really, as I will be back very soon.
Perfect for any occasion or just for a little self indulgence. This is the third time we have visited this delightful restaurant. It is consistently excellent and well worth a visit. We were visitors to Swansea but for the locals it is clearly a favourite. We had the lunchtime menu and eventually chose salmon fish cake and chicken liver parfait, followed by hake in a light sauce, and to finish cheesecake. All excellent. The staff are polite, efficient and very helpful. Again a memorable experience and we both are looking forward to our next visit.
Excellent family lunch Amazing food, glad we found this little gem for our family lunch. The food were excellent, everything from Starter to desert were cooked to perfection. We all had something different:Starters: scallops, fish cake, soupMain course: steak, lamb shank, hake, mixed seafood and the chef’s went out of his way to cook carbonara with king prawns for our fussy daughter (amazing)!Desert: crème brûlée, jam pudding, bread & butter pudding, lemon tartAll highly recommended. The wine was very reasonable too.The staffs were very attentive and friendly. We’ll definitely come back when we visit Swansea again. Reservation for weekend is a must as they can accommodate 40 covers for lunch or dinner at a time. The lemon tart didn’t stay on the plate long enough for my husband to take a photo!
Fabulous meal Wow. We just completed six weeks in Wales and Greece and had some fabulous meals but our meal at Hanson’s was my favourite. Service is friendly, helpful and professional. I had hake, my wife and aunt sea bass. Both dishes were superb. Can’t remember my appetizer but it was superb too. Bread and butter pudding for dessert is sensational! Everything about this place is top notch. You need a reservation. I can’t wait to go back there on our next visit to Swansea.Let us know what we were able to do for you.
